Kvichak River, Alaska

The Kvichak River is a legendary destination for trout fishermen in North America. This is a place where most fishermen will have a real chance of catching the trout of their lives. Native rainbows in the 20 to 26 inch range are abundant while there are excellent possibilities of catching a fish of over 30 inches. The explosive runs of these beautiful trout and their amazing aerial acrobatics will make an everlasting impression on the visiting angler.

Travellers stay at a comfortable river front lodge just across from the village of Iguiugig, very close to where Lake Iliamna drains into the Kvichak River. This unique location gives guests easy access to the excellent waters at the tail of the lake as well as quick access to the “braids”. Fishing with fly rods and spinning gear can be equally successful provided that the technique employed is right. In May and June large rainbow trout from Lake Iliamna invade the river to feed on sockeye smolts on thier way to the ocean, During this time of year fishing with streamers can produce spectacular results. By mid August the fishing for large rainbow trout heats up again and stays great into October. During this time of the season the trout will be keying on salmon eggs and flesh. Beads in appropriate sizes and colors are the ticket to matchsome of the biggest trout that will be gorging on eggs in preparation for a long winter. This is the time of year when the biggest trout are caught.

Coho, Chum and Sockeye Salmon, Trout and Dolly Varden: 6 to 8 weight fly rods. In june fishing use smolt imitations, egg sucking leaches and wooly buggers. 9 to 12 foot medium action spinning rods, with a good reel loaded with 300 yards of 12 to 15 pound test line.

The lodge is simple but comfortable. Guests stay in very basic rooms with private bathrooms. meals are served in the main dining room / lounge area in the same building. 110V. electricity and hot running water are available 24 hours a day.

Guests generally fly regular commercial flights to Anchorage and then to Dillingham. From Dillingham they may catch an air taxi to Igiugig where they will be received by lodge staff and transferred to the lodge.

Location: the lodge is located near where Lake Iliamna drains into the Kvichak River, just across from the village of Igiugig.

Season: June – October

Mejores Fechas:  June for trout on streamers. June and July for sockeye and chum salmon, mid August – September for large rainbow trout. 

Nº of rods allowed: The lodge can accomodate up to 8 persons.

Fishing techniques allowed: Spinning and fly fishing

Species: Chinook, sockeye, coho, and pink salmon, rainbow trout, dolly varden and grayling.
