Eagle River, Labrador
One of Canada’s most productive Atlantic salmon rivers with an average catch of 4 to 5 salmon per rod a day.The season begins in June with MSW salmon in the 5 to 10 kilo range. Gilse averaging 2 to 3 kilos follow in July and August. From mid-August on large males enter the river along with good numbers of sea-run char.

River Finn
The River Finn as a destination for salmon fishermen might be one of Ireland’s best kept secrets. Until recently, it was hardly known among salmon fishermen in Europe. However, with its inauguration in 2007, the Glenmore Rivers Lodge, owned and partially run by Mick Hucknall the lead singer and Chris Demagery an ex-saxophonist of the group “Simply Red”, has already converted this river into a destination of reference among a small group of anglers who have had the privilege to visit it.

River Blackwater
Fishing for Spring salmon begins in February and March. Traditionally June and July offered fantastic runs of grilse, though commercial fishing at the mouth of the river eventually eroded the fishing. However, restrictions on commercial fishing in recent years have led to new hope for the future of the grilse run. For now the late run of summer salmon in August and September continues to provide good fishing. Guests have the option of lodging in a hsitorical estate mansión or local bed & breakfast.

River Mourne
Widely recognized as the best salmon river in Northern Ireland, the River Mourne is the largest tributary in the Foyle drainage system. Pescatravel offers fishing on some of the best private waters the Mourne has to offer. Flowing from Newtownstewart to Strabane, the Mourne is a large fast flowing salmon river up to 100 meters wide in many areas. From May on fishing for Atlantic salmon can be quite good, though the best salmon fishing is generally in September and October. On the other hand, beginning around mid-July, the Mourne generally receives an excellent run of sea-run brown trout.

ICELAND
Breiddalsá
The Breiðdalsá River is a beautiful mid-sized salmon river located on the East coast of Iceland near the village of Breiðdalsvík. Incuded in the fishery’s rotation are the tributaries, Tinnudalsá and Norðurdalsá, two small rivers ideal for delicate fishing with one hand rods and small flies. In contrast, light two hand rods or switch rods are the instruments of choice for fishing the main river, the Breiddalsá which offers large pools with beautiful fly water. The entire system provides enough variety to content just about any kind of fly fisherman.

Fnjoska
The Fnjoska is a mid-sized river located on the northern coast of Iceland just 10 kilometers from Akureyri. In contrast to many rivers in Iceland, all of the Fnoska’s salmon reproduce naturally with no human intervention. Its cold waters also provide excellent habitat to a healthy population of sea-run char.

Grimsa

Jokla I
Located 40 kilometers to the north west of the town of Egilsstaðir on the east coast of Iceland, the Jökla River rises out of the eastern side of the Vatnajokull Glaciar flowing 100 kilometers to where it empties into the North Atlantic Ocean. Prior to the construction of a hidro-electric dam on the river in 2006, the Jökla was one of the dirtiest rivers in Iceland because of the glacial silt it carried. With the dam, the reservoir served to filter out the sediment creating ideal conditions below the dam to create and excellent salmon river. Subsequently using salmon from some of the Jökla’s clear water tributaries, a salmon spawning and smolt release program was established. In just a few years the Jökla fishery reached the amazing mark of 800 salmon caught in a single season.

Langa
The Langá River is usually one of Iceland’s top ten salmon rivers in terms of rod catch. It is a beautiful and varied river to fly fish. Indeed only fly fishing is permitted. Generally a single hand 6 to 8 weight rod is sufficient to cover most pools. However, there are few wider pools where a switch rod or a light spey rod can come in handy. Over the years the river’s management have taken many steps to improve the fishing including building 5 salmon ladders, regulating the river flows from the lake that feeds it and working on the channel in certain areas to improve holding pools.

Also known as the Big Laxá, this river has drawn big fish seeking fly fishermen for years. Average weights of its msw salmon are the highest of any river in Iceland. This is a good size fly only river definitely best fished with two hand rods.

Laxá in Dölum
Over the years, Laxá í Dölum’s reputation as one of the great international Atlantic salmon fishing destinations has grown steadily. As its fame grew, it became popular with a priviledged group of famous public figures. Golf champion Jack Nicklaus and astronaut Neil Armstrong are just two examples of the numerous famous personalities that have fished its waters. Laxá en Kjos
Perhaps there is no river that is more representative of the salmon rivers in Iceland than Laxá in Kjos. It is said that the fisherman who learns to fish this river properly, can fish any river in Iceland successfully. Its waters can be extremely technical and demanding, offering great opportunities to test ones skill fishing with floating lines and flies as small as a size 18. Every year it ranks among the top rivers in Iceland in terms of annual catch with an average of 1,200 to 2,400 salmon caught per year.

This absolute gem of a salmon river is located just 25 minutes from downtown Reykjavik. Midfjardara
The Midfjardará system offers the quintessential experience in Atlantic salmon fishing in Iceland. Located in north-western Iceland, this wonderful river runs 115 km from its source to its mouth. Four rivers make up the river system including the main river the Miðfjarðará, the Austurá, the Vesturá and the smaller more intimate Núpsá. Together they provide some of the finest fly fishing for Atlantic salmon in the world. Of all of the rivers in Iceland which are completely wild (having no smolt release program), the Midfjardará is the most productive. It also happens to be one of Iceland’s best rivers for larger multi sea winter salmon.

The Nordura River is known to Icelanders as the “most beautiful of rivers”. It flows through the Borgarfjordur region in western Iceland and is one of several tributaries to the glacial Hvita River. East Ranga River
Its massive smolt release program has pushed this popular river to the top of Iceland’s salmon rivers in terms of rod catch reaching the incredible total of 9070 salmon caught in the 2020 season. A high proportion of its fish are msw salmon. Because of its size you will want to fish it with a 2 hand rod, although in the season bait spin fishing are also permitted.

Sog River
Flowing out of Lake Thingvallavatn, the Sog or Sogid is Iceland’s largest clearwater river. It is a reasonably priced river known for large multi-winter salmon and plentiful char. The average annual catch of salmon on the Sog is approximately 400 fish and they can run up to over 20 pounds. However, the river also offers good fishing for arctic char of up to 3 kilos in size. One of the big advantages that the Sog has over many Icelandic salmon rivers is that it never suffers problems with water levels as it is fed by the largest lake in Iceland. It is thus immune from the low water problems that come with periodic droughts that wreak havoc from time to time on the fishing on other Icelandic rivers.

Gaula River
The Gaula River is one of the most reknowned salmon rivers in all of Norway. It is known by Atlantic salmon fishermen around the world for its fabulous fly water and large salmon. It offers excellent possibilities for fish of over 20 lbs with occasional fish that may even surpass the 40 lb mark. It is the second most productive river in Norway, surpassed only by the Tana, a river which is twice as long. The Gaula rises from its headwaters in the mountains of central Norway in the area of Holtàlen and flows 145 kilometers to its mouth in Trondheim Fjord. With no dams at any point along its path, it is a completely free flowing river.

Malselv River
One of Norway’s lesser known big salmon rivers, the Malselv is larger but mostly wadeable river with beautiful fly water for spey fishermen and fantastic spinning water. Although in terms of captures it has always been one of Norway’s top rivers, it has never received an excessive amount of pressure from visiting anglers. Historically for many years the river was fished by English noblemen. More recently it was highlighted in the book “Fifty More Places to Fly Fish Before You Die”.

Namsen River
For the Atlantic salmon fisherman looking for big fish, the Namsen River is definitely a destination to keep in mind. Every year fish of 40+ lbs are caught here. The largest recorded salmon caught in the Namsen weighed 68 lbs! Curiously despite being such a good river for large fish, it also tends to be a very reliable river as it also offers excellent runs of 2 year salmon and grilse to assure good catch numbers.

Grindal Salmon Lodge, Orkla River
Averaging 5,500 rod caught salmon per year, the Orkla River is not only one of the most beautiful salmon rivers in Norway it is also one of the most productive. The Orkla is somewhat smaller than its nearby neighbor, the Gaula. Even so, it is still a large river with powerful currents producing very strong salmon that often grow to considerable sizes.

Reisa River
The Reisa is a big fish salmon river. Few rivers in the world can boast such high probabilities of hooking fish in the 30lb+ range. In contrast to the evolution of many salmon rivers worldwide, the returns of large salmon are actually improving from year to year. Similar to its sister river a bit farther north, the Alta, the Reisa can claim that at least 40% of returning salmon have weights of over 15 lbs and more than half of these weigh over 20 lbs.

Drozdovka River Camp
Over the years the Drozdovka River has earned its fame as one of the premier big fish Atlantic salmon rivers in the Kola Peninsula. Located within the Arctic Circle on the northern shores of the peninsula, the Drozdovka is one of the Kola Rivers where you will have the best chances of catching 20 lb + and even 30 lb + plus fish. The gin clear water of this mid-sized river are a joy to fish with a number of beautiful pools which are largely wadeable.

Kharlovka
It is considered one of the best rivers in the world for large msw salmon. Under the protection of the Atlantic Salmon Reserve and its strict catch and release policy and other conservation efforts the river has prospered. It is said that every year fish in the 30+ kilo range are hooked but because of their strength and the power of the river’s currents they have always escaped. Nevertheless, captures of fish of over 10 kilos are frecuent and fish in the 20+ kilo range have been caught here.

Kola River
The Kola River is one of the Kola Peninsula’s most accesible salmon rivers within a relatively short drive of Murmansk. Consequently it does get quite a bit of fishing pressure from the locals. Nevertheless, its limited access fly waters give fishermen a chance to spread out a bit. It is another of Kola’s big fish rivers where salmon in the 10+ kilo range are nothing exceptional and encounters with monsters of 15 + kilos occur with surprising frequency, as it is a river easily accesible by road, programs are economically priced.

Statistically the Ponoi is the world’s most productive atlantic salmon river. A week here can produce more captures than an entire season on some of Scotland’s or Canada’s well known rivers. The average size of the Ponoi salmon is around 12 pounds though 20+ pound fish are common.

As in many others rivers in the northern Kola Peninsula, mainly spring and summer run fish make up the bulk of the returning salmon. The first fish begin arriving in early June. There are no large holding pools the lower part of the river, so the fish come in an it run up river despite cold high water. The first holding pools appear only 3-4 km from the sea. June salmon in Sidorovka are large full bodied salmon. Fish in the 8 to 9 kg range are common and there are good chances to hook 100 cm+ salmon.

Yokanga River
For salmon fishermen in the know, this gem of a river on the nortthern coast of the Kola Peninsula is synonimous with big salmon and epic battles between man and fish. It is known as a young man’s river because of its heavy currents and difficult wading. It is indeed a substantial river with lots of fast water pocked with boulders and the truth is that fishermen should be in good shape if they want to get the most of it. Nevertheless, some of its less demanding waters can still offer large prizes to fishermen who are not quite as fit physically.

Río Varzuga
Located on the southern coast of the Kola Peninsula, the Varzuga River is one of the most prolific salmon rivers in the world. Guests stay at an excellent full service lodge. The best fishing usually begins in May and continures through June. Weekly catches of 20 to 30 salmon per rod are quite normal.
