Bearclaw Lodge, Lake Aleknagik, Alaska
The fishing season begins in June with the descent of salmon smolts heading to the sea and incredible fishing for char and rainbow trout that hunt them. This moment coincides with the arrival of the first chinook salmon into the bay’s rivers. In July, good runs of chum salmon and overwhelming numbers of sockeye salmon follow.
August is already a time of abundant and varied fishing in Bristol Bay. These are the best dates for coho salmon fishing. These acrobatic fighters will delight both spinning and fly anglers with spectacular battles. One of the best rivers in the area for coho fishing, the Wood River, is just 20 minutes by boat from the lodge.
You should also keep in mind that this area of Bristol Bay offers the best dry fly fishing in Alaska. July and August are optimal for rainbow trout and grayling fishing with dry flies, even with mouse imitations on the surface. Additionally, you can enjoy spectacular fishing for Dolly Varden char with streamers, nymphs, or beads that imitate salmon eggs.
One of the special features of the Bearclaw Lodge fishing program is the possibility of hiking to numerous nearby streams. For the more adventurous anglers, excursions with long hikes of up to 8 kilometers can be made to reach some streams that offer excellent fishing, but there are also many productive spots that can be reached in less than half an hour on foot from the lodge. Anglers will also have kayaks at their disposal, which they can take at any time after dinner to explore the surroundings.
