ICELAND SALMON CATCH STATISTICS 2025 – Best Salmon Rivers in Iceland

Below is a ranking of the top 25 salmon rivers in Iceland in 2025 with total season catch statistics and the average catch per rod for each river. In general, the 2025 salmon season in Iceland has been somewhat disappointing. Above all, it has not been a good season in the rivers on the west coast of Iceland. After a promising start with a good run of MSW (multi-sea-winter) salmon in some rivers, the expected good return of grilse never materialized. Some river managers cite last year’s cold and late summer as a possible reason why many smolts did not go out to sea until this year. If this is true, a good return would be expected next year.

The West Rangá is once again the most productive river in Iceland, significantly increasing its total number of salmon caught to 5,690 among 22 rods, a spectacular increase over the total of 4,601 salmon caught in 2024. The East Rangá comes in as a distant second with a total of 2,870 caught among 18 rods, slightly improving its results from 2024. Third place in the ranking is again occupied by the Thverá-Kjarrá with 2,239 salmon caught among 14 rods.
