For salt water fly fishing in the Seychelles Islands, the Farquhar Atoll offers an unforgettable world class experience. The abundance and diversity of salt water game fish you can target on the fly in Farquhar is simply amazing. Some of the great sport fish species you will find in eye watering numbers while flyfishing on the flats, in the channels and the lagoon include a variety of Trevally species including monster Giant Trevally, Bonefish, Milkfish, Triggerfish, IndoPacific Permit, Barracudas and the incredibly powerful Bumphead Parrotfish. Great extenses of hard white sand, turtle grass and broken coral bottomed flats provide comforable wading and endless sight fishing opportunities. Given that just offshore of the atoll the bottom drops off quickly, guests may also experience great offshore fishing for Yellowfin and Dogtooth Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish, Groupers, Snappers as well as Barracuda and GTs.<\/p>\n
At over 700 km to the southwest of the main island, Mahe, the Farquhar Atoll is the most southerly of all the Seychelles Islands. Inhabited by only a small population of local Seychellois, the islands\u2019 remoteness has preserved an incredible saltwater fishery. Indeed other than the handful of lucky fly fishermen that visit the atoll every year and a reduced number of locals the atoll\u2019s waters are virtually untouched through most of the year. While on the other hand the presence of the locals on the islands is also part of what makes Farquhar such a fine salt water destination. This small local population provides the human resources to manage the air strip, care for and maintain the installations and make it possible to supply the fishing lodge and sustain such a high level of comfort for guests in this remote location.<\/p>\n
Two larger islands the North Island and the South Island, the island of Goelette to the south and a small group of islands called the Tros Iles make up the bulk of Farquhar\u2019s landmass. While the total landmass of the Atoll is only seven and a half square kilometers, the total area of the atoll is 170 square kilometers. This huge expanse including the lagoon and endless flats, channels and reefs provide ideal habitat and hunting grounds for a huge variety of game fish and an extensive venue for visiting fly fishermen to stalk them with their guides. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Guests at the Farquhar Atoll will enjoy a total of 6 full days of fishing with five of the best salt water fly fishing guides you will find anywhere. Guides are experienced and extremely versed in an impressive range of species and situations from enticing, hooking and fighting huge GTs or targeting pods of tailing Bumphead Parrotfish on the flats to enticing elusive IndoPacific Permit to take a fly to taking Yellowfin Tuna or Wahoos on the fly offshore. Every two fishermen will be attended to by one guide captaining a 17 foot skiff powered by a 90 hp outboard. Additionally guides also have at their disposal two 18 foot Panga boats powered by two 25 hp outboard motors to comfortably and safely fish the offshore waters around the atoll. All of the guides are extremely able and qualified skippers.<\/p>\n
The Farquhar fishing season is split into two parts. The first part of the fishing season begins in early October and runs through to late December. A mid-season break is then taken until the second half of February as this is generally the rainiesty time of year. The second part of the fishing season goes from late February to early May. The operation shuts down from mid-May to the end of September for monsoon season.<\/p>\n

Fast action 9 or 10 wieght rods\u00a0 are recommended for bonefish and other smaller quary to be found on the flats. Fast action 12 weight rods are recommended for GTs and Bumphead Parrotfish. Reels should be heavy duty salt water reels\u00a0loaded with floating tropical salt water lines and 300 meters of backing.\u00a0 Guests will be provided with a detailed comprehensive gear list before their trip.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A maximum of 10 guest fishermen are lodged in three very comfortable beach houses each with two double bedrooms with on suite bathrooms. Each beach house is air conditioned and has 24 hour 220v electricity and hot water. Services include full house keeping and laundry every two days. After fishing guests can relax and have a cocktail in the bar and lounge area of a separate main lodge. Meals are also served here in an air conditioned dining room or on occasions in a covered outdoor dining area overlooking the ocean. The menu includes a mix of international fare and creole dishes prepared by a very fine chef.\u00a0 Water and soft drinks are included in the program. Wines and liquors and local beers may be purchased on the atoll.<\/p>\n

The majority of guests fly into Mahe International Airport from Dubai. Additionally there are usually also scheduled direct flights to Mahe from Paris, London, Frankfurt or Dusseldorf in\u00a0 Europe.
