The River Finn as a destination for salmon fishermen might be one of Ireland\u2019s best kept secrets. Until recently, it was hardly known among salmon fishermen in Europe. Fishing for Spring salmon begins in February and March. Traditionally June and July offered fantastic runs of grilse, though commercial fishing at the mouth of the river eventually eroded the fishing. However, restrictions on commercial fishing in recent years have led to new hope for the future of the grilse run. Widely recognized as the best salmon river in Northern Ireland, the River Mourne is the largest tributary in the Foyle drainage system. Pescatravel offers fishing on some of the best private waters the Mourne has to offer. Flowing from Newtownstewart to Strabane, the Mourne is a large fast flowing salmon river up to 100 meters wide in many areas. Located 40 kilometers to the north west of the town of Egilssta\u00f0ir on the east coast of Iceland, the J\u00f6kla River rises out of the eastern side of the Vatnajokull Glaciar flowing 100 kilometers to where it empties into the North Atlantic Ocean. Prior to the construction of a hidro-electric dam on the river in 2006, the J\u00f6kla was one of the dirtiest rivers in Iceland because of the glacial silt it carried. With the dam, the reservoir served to filter out the sediment creating ideal conditions below the dam to create and excellent salmon river. Subsequently using salmon from some of the J\u00f6kla\u2019s clear water tributaries, a salmon spawning and smolt release program was established. In just a few years the J\u00f6kla fishery reached the amazing mark of 800 salmon caught in a single season.

The Lang\u00e1 River is usually one of Iceland\u2019s top ten salmon rivers in terms of rod catch. It is a beautiful and varied river to fly fish. Indeed only fly fishing is permitted. Generally a single hand 6 to 8 weight rod is sufficient to cover most pools. However, there are few wider pools where a switch rod or a light spey rod can come in handy. Over the years the river\u2019s management have taken many steps to improve the fishing including building 5\u00a0salmon ladders, regulating the river flows from the lake that feeds it and working on the channel in certain areas to improve holding pools.

Flowing out of Lake Thingvallavatn, the Sog or Sogid is Iceland\u2019s largest clearwater river. It is a reasonably priced river known for large multi-winter salmon and plentiful char. The average annual catch of salmon on the Sog is approximately 400 fish and they can run up to over 20 pounds. However, the river also offers good fishing for arctic char of up to 3 kilos in size. One of the big advantages that the Sog has over many Icelandic salmon rivers is that it never suffers problems with water levels as it is fed by the largest lake in Iceland. It is thus immune from the low water problems that come with periodic droughts that wreak havoc from time to time on the fishing on other Icelandic rivers.

The\u00a0Gaula River is one of the most reknowned salmon rivers in all of Norway. It is known by Atlantic salmon fishermen around the world for its fabulous fly water and large salmon. It offers excellent possibilities for fish of over 20 lbs with occasional fish that may even surpass the 40 lb mark.\u00a0It is the second most productive river in Norway, surpassed only by the Tana, a river which is twice as long. The Gaula rises from its headwaters in the mountains of central Norway in the area of Holt\u00e0len and flows 145 kilometers to its mouth in Trondheim Fjord. With no dams at any point along its path, it is a completely free flowing river.\u00a0

One of Norway\u2019s lesser known big salmon rivers, the Malselv is larger but mostly wadeable river with beautiful fly water for spey fishermen and fantastic spinning water. Although in terms of captures it has always been one of Norway\u2019s top rivers, it has never received an excessive amount of pressure from visiting anglers. Historically for many years the river was fished by English noblemen. More recently it was highlighted in the book \u201cFifty More Places to Fly Fish Before You Die\u201d. \u00a0

For the Atlantic salmon fisherman looking for big fish, the Namsen River is definitely a destination to keep in mind. Every year fish of 40+ lbs are caught here. \u00a0The largest recorded salmon caught in the Namsen weighed 68 lbs! Curiously despite being such a good river for large fish, it also tends to be a very reliable river as it also offers excellent runs of 2 year salmon and grilse to assure good catch numbers.
