The 2021 salmon season in Iceland seemed to be something of an extension of the prior season, overall producing somewhat disappointing results. Cold weather lingered throughout June pushing back the timeline on salmon runs throughout the country. Catch numbers did not rebound significantly on most rivers with some notable exceptions. The West Rang\u00e1 regained its spot as Iceland’s most productive river after a number of years of being relegated to number two by the East Rang\u00e1. Nevertheless, with a total catch of 3,437 salmon caught, its yield was still far below that of its glory years. In the case of the East Rang\u00e1, the precipitous drop in catch from the amazing total of 9,070 salmon caught in the 2020 season to 3,274 was at least partially to be expected. The question is how much of the results for 2020 season have to do with the change in river management and they mark the end of East Ranga’s years of bonanza. As for the Midfjardar\u00e1, number 3 in the ranking, although its figure of 1796 salmon caught this season is more than respectable for a 10 rod river, the number is well below that of its peak years. Fingers crossed for a rebound in 2022. One of the bright spots in the ranking for 2021 is Lax\u00e1 in Kjos, which has continued to improve since its dismal showing of only 372 salmon caught in 2019. After reaching a catch of 929 salmon in 2020, this past season it managed to break the 1000 fish barrier again with a total of 1066 salmon caught on 8 rods. We have taken note that this is the second year under new management and hope that the positive trend continues.
