Prior to the construction of a hidro-electric dam on the river in 2006, the J\u00f6kla was one of the dirtiest rivers in Iceland because of the glacial silt it carried. With the dam, the reservoir served to filter out the sediment creating ideal conditions below the dam to create and excellent salmon river. Subsequently using salmon from some of the J\u00f6kla\u2019s clear water tributaries, a salmon spawning and smolt release program was established. It is a beautiful and varied river to fly fish. Indeed only fly fishing is permitted. Generally a single hand 6 to 8 weight rod is sufficient to cover most pools. However, there are few wider pools where a switch rod or a light spey rod can come in handy. A high proportion of its fish are msw salmon. It is a reasonably priced river known for large multi-winter salmon and plentiful char. The average annual catch of salmon on the Sog is approximately 400 fish and they can run up to over 20 pounds. However, the river also offers good fishing for arctic char of up to 3 kilos in size. One of the big advantages that the Sog has over many Icelandic salmon rivers is that it never suffers problems with water levels as it is fed by the largest lake in Iceland. It provides excellent sport for salmon fly fishermen who prefer more intimate scenarios without giving up the possibility of catching larger fish. Its waters are especially well suited to one hand rods and delicate presentations.
